How levels of care work in New Jersey addiction treatment

Addiction treatment is not one program. It is a series of levels of care, each with a different amount of structure and clinical support. Choosing the right starting point matters. Too little structure and early recovery can fall apart. Too much and treatment becomes hard to sustain alongside work and family. The quiz above asks eight questions about substance use, withdrawal risk, treatment history, and home stability — the same factors our clinical team reviews during an assessment — and points you toward a likely starting level.

Medical detox (referral and coordination)

If stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids would cause significant physical withdrawal, supervised detox comes first. Detox usually lasts three to seven days and keeps you medically stable. We do not run detox in house. We coordinate placement with trusted regional providers, then bring you straight into PHP or IOP so there is no gap in care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is the highest level of outpatient care. Clients attend five to six days per week for several hours a day and sleep at home. It fits people leaving detox or inpatient, people using daily, and people whose work and family life have already been disrupted. Days include individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric review, medication management, and relapse-prevention skills.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP meets three to four days per week, with morning and evening groups plus a virtual option. It suits people stepping down from PHP and people who need real clinical care while keeping a job, school, or caregiving schedule. Many clients stay in IOP for eight to twelve weeks, then move to weekly outpatient therapy.

That is common, and it is not a problem. A short confidential call sorts it out quickly. Our admissions team asks a few more clinical questions, reviews your insurance benefits, and recommends a starting point. We work with most major plans and can usually give you an answer the same day.
