We will assess your situation and connect you with the right provider today.

Why We Assess and Refer Rather Than Operate Our Own Detox

Cherry Hill Recovery Center does not operate an on-site detox facility — and that is a deliberate clinical decision. No single detox facility is the right fit for every patient. The substances involved, the severity of dependence, co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, insurance coverage, location, and personal circumstances all determine what kind of detox environment will give you the safest and most effective start to recovery. Rather than fitting every patient into one program, we take the time to assess your full clinical picture and then match you to the detox provider best suited to your specific needs.

    A Referral Is Not a Hand-Off — It Is a Coordinated Transition

When we refer a patient to a detox provider, we do not hand you a phone number and wish you luck. Our team communicates directly with the receiving facility, shares your clinical assessment, confirms your admission, verifies your insurance coverage, and stays in contact with the detox team throughout your stay. When detox is complete, we coordinate your transition directly into our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) so there is no gap in your care, no confusion about next steps, and no starting over from scratch.

What Happens When You Call Us

The process begins with a single call to 856-200-3127. Our admissions team will conduct a free, confidential clinical assessment — covering the substances involved, your medical and psychiatric history, your insurance, and your personal circumstances. From there we identify the detox providers from our trusted regional network that are the best match for you, confirm availability, verify insurance coverage at that facility, and coordinate your admission. Most patients are placed within 24 to 48 hours of their initial call.

Our Assess & Refer Process — Step by Step

From your first call to your first day in PHP or IOP — we coordinate every single step.

      Coordinated Referral

We contact the detox facility directly, share your clinical assessment, confirm a bed is available, verify your insurance coverage at that specific facility, and coordinate your admission on your behalf. You do not have to make a single call.

Who Needs Medical Detox Before Entering Treatment?

Not everyone who enters addiction treatment needs medically supervised detox first. For some patients, treatment can begin directly with PHP or IOP. For others — particularly those with physical dependence on certain substances — attempting to stop without medical supervision is not just uncomfortable, it can be medically dangerous. Our clinical assessment determines exactly where you fall and whether detox is the right first step for you.

Substances That Typically Require Medical Detox

    Alcohol

Alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening — causing seizures, delirium tremens, and cardiovascular complications without proper medical management. Medically supervised detox is strongly recommended for anyone with moderate to severe alcohol dependence.

    Heroin & Opioids

Opioid withdrawal is intensely uncomfortable and carries a high risk of relapse and overdose — particularly given fentanyl contamination in the current drug supply. Medical detox allows for safe withdrawal management and early initiation of MAT.

    Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepine withdrawal — from Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, and similar medications — can cause life-threatening seizures and must never be attempted without medical supervision. A medically managed taper is the safe and standard approach.

    Fentanyl & Synthetics

The extreme potency of fentanyl and synthetic opioids makes medical supervision during detox especially critical. When referring fentanyl-involved patients we communicate this specifically to the receiving detox facility so the medical team is fully prepared.

Who May Not Need Medical Detox

Patients with dependence on cocaine, marijuana, stimulants such as Adderall or methamphetamine, or certain prescription drugs may not require medical detox before beginning treatment. While withdrawal from these substances can be psychologically difficult, it is typically not medically dangerous. Our clinical assessment will determine whether detox is necessary for your situation or whether you can begin PHP or IOP directly.

    Our Assessment Determines:

    • Whether medical detox is required
    • Which substances require supervised withdrawal
    • The appropriate level of medical monitoring needed
    • Whether MAT should be initiated during or after detox
    • The right detox facility for your specific substance history
    • When you are clinically ready to transition into PHP or IOP

What to Expect During Medical Detox

Understanding what happens during medically supervised detox can make it significantly easier to take the first step. While every patient's experience is unique and varies based on substance, duration of use, and individual physiology, here is what the general detox process looks like at a medically supervised facility.

    PHASE 1

    Intake & Medical Evaluation

Upon arrival at the detox facility you receive a comprehensive medical and psychiatric evaluation. The medical team reviews your substance history, current health status, and any medications — and creates a personalized detox protocol. Because we have already shared your clinical assessment with the facility, this process is streamlined and your needs are already known.

    PHASE 2

    Supervised Withdrawal Management

The medical team monitors your withdrawal 24 hours a day, administering medications to manage symptoms and prevent dangerous complications. For opioid detox, MAT medications like Suboxone may be initiated. For alcohol and benzo detox, a medically managed taper protocol is used. Duration typically ranges from 5 to 10 days depending on the substance and severity of dependence.

    PHASE 3

    Stabilization & Transition

As acute withdrawal subsides the focus shifts to stabilization — ensuring you are medically stable, appropriately medicated if MAT has been initiated, and clinically ready for the next level of care. This is the point at which our team at Cherry Hill Recovery Center coordinates your transfer into PHP or IOP — your next step in recovery is already planned and waiting.

A Note on Detox Alone Not Being Treatment

Medical detox addresses physical dependence — it does not treat the psychological, behavioral, and emotional aspects of addiction. Detox without follow-up treatment dramatically increases the risk of relapse. This is why our assess and refer model is built around continuity — we ensure that detox is the beginning of your recovery journey, not the end of it.

Bridging Detox and Treatment with Medication Assisted Treatment

One of the most critical moments in opioid recovery is the transition from detox into ongoing treatment. Without proper support — including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate — the risk of relapse and overdose is highest in the days immediately following detox. Cherry Hill Recovery Center bridges this gap by ensuring that MAT with Suboxone or Sublocade is initiated either at the detox facility or upon entry into our PHP or IOP program.

Our medical team includes licensed Suboxone and Sublocade prescribers. When a patient is completing detox through our referral network, we coordinate directly with the detox facility regarding MAT status so there is no interruption in medication management during the transition into our programming. This coordination is a critical component of why our assess and refer model produces better outcomes than a simple hand-off.

    MAT Available at CHRC:

    Suboxone (Daily)

Buprenorphine/naloxone — daily sublingual film or tablet. Flexible dosing under our medical team's supervision.

    Sublocade (Monthly)

Extended-release buprenorphine injection — administered once monthly for maximum convenience and consistency.

    Detox Referral for Specific Substances

Our detox assessment and referral process is tailored to the specific substance or substances involved. Different substances require different medical protocols, monitoring levels, and detox environments. Here is how we approach referrals for the most common substances we see.

Why Assess & Refer Produces Better Outcomes Than One-Size-Fits-All Detox

There is a common misconception that a treatment center without its own detox unit is missing something. In reality the opposite is often true. A single on-site detox unit can only serve the patients it is designed for — while our assess and refer model means every patient goes to the detox environment that is the best possible match for their specific clinical needs.

    Personalized Matching

We evaluate your complete clinical picture before making any referral — substances, medical history, psychiatric needs, insurance, and location all determine where you go. You get the right provider, not the nearest one.

    Coordinated Care Continuity

We communicate directly with the detox facility before, during, and after your stay. Your clinical information travels with you. Your PHP or IOP admission is already arranged before you leave detox. There are no gaps.

    Broader Network Access

Because we refer across a regional network rather than operating one facility, we can match patients to specialized providers — opioid-specific, dual-diagnosis capable, gender-specific, and more — that would not exist if we only had one in-house unit.

We Do Not Hand You a Phone Number. We Make the Call.

Every detox referral we make is preceded by a clinical assessment, a provider match, an insurance verification, and a direct admission coordination call to the receiving facility. We stay in contact throughout your detox and we have your next step — PHP or IOP at Cherry Hill Recovery Center — ready and waiting when you complete.

What Comes After Detox — Your Recovery Continues Here

Medical detox addresses physical dependence. It is the essential first step for many patients — but it is not treatment for addiction. Research consistently shows that patients who complete detox without entering a structured treatment program have dramatically higher rates of relapse and overdose. This is why every detox referral we make is built around a clear, pre-arranged transition into our PHP or IOP program at Cherry Hill Recovery Center.

    Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

For patients who need intensive daily structure after detox — 5 to 6 days per week of clinical programming including individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric care, and medication management. The most comprehensive step-down from detox available on an outpatient basis.

    Learn About PHP →

    Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For patients who are clinically stable after detox and ready for a more flexible level of care — 3 to 4 sessions per week with group therapy, individual counseling, psychiatric oversight, and relapse prevention skills training. Available in person and virtually.

    Learn About IOP →

    Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

For patients completing opioid detox — Suboxone or Sublocade under our medical team's supervision, coordinated to begin at or immediately after detox. MAT dramatically reduces relapse risk in the critical early weeks following opioid detox.
