What PHP Means in Mental Health Care
A partial hospitalization program delivers hospital-level structure without the overnight stay. A typical day includes group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric medication management, and skills work — then you go home and sleep in your own bed.
- Five to six days per week, generally five to eight hours per day.
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management as part of the program, not a separate referral.
- Group therapy as the core, with individual therapy alongside it.

- A defined length of stay — usually two to four weeks before stepping down to IOP.
PHP vs Inpatient vs IOP vs Weekly Therapy
Where PHP sits on the continuum, from most to least intensive:
- Inpatient / residential — 24-hour care and supervision, you live at the facility. Appropriate for acute psychiatric crisis or medical instability.
- PHP — near-daily intensive treatment, home at night. The step down from a hospital stay, or the step up when outpatient care has not held.
- IOP — three to four sessions a week, around three hours each, structured enough to work around a job.
- Outpatient therapy — weekly or biweekly sessions, best for maintenance once you are stable.
