Psychiatric Evaluation at Cherry Hill Recovery Center
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatrist or psychiatric professional — examining a person's mental health history, current symptoms, emotional functioning, and any relationship between mental health and substance use. At Cherry Hill Recovery Center, psychiatric evaluation is a core component of our addiction treatment programs — because the majority of people seeking help for addiction also have co-occurring mental health conditions that must be identified and treated alongside the addiction itself. If you are unsure whether a psychiatric evaluation here is right for your situation, call us at 856-200-3127 and our admissions team will give you a straight answer.
Why Psychiatric Evaluation Matters in Addiction Treatment
Research consistently shows that the majority of people with substance use disorders have at least one co-occurring mental health condition — most commonly depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, ADHD, or bipolar disorder. In many cases the mental health condition came first — and the substance use developed as an attempt to manage untreated or undertreated psychological pain. In others, prolonged substance use produces or worsens psychiatric symptoms that develop over time. In either case, treating only the addiction while leaving the underlying mental health condition unaddressed produces incomplete recovery with a high relapse risk. Psychiatric evaluation is how we identify what is really going on beneath the surface — and build a treatment plan that addresses all of it.
Our Specialty — Where Addiction and Mental Health Intersect
Cherry Hill Recovery Center's psychiatric evaluation service is specifically designed for individuals where substance use and mental health overlap. This is not a general adult psychiatry practice. Our clinical team specializes in the complex relationship between addiction and co-occurring conditions — and brings that depth of expertise to every evaluation we conduct. If you are looking for a psychiatrist who understands both dimensions of your situation, call us to find out if we are the right fit.
Who We Typically See for Psychiatric Evaluation
Most people who come to Cherry Hill Recovery Center for a psychiatric evaluation are either entering or already in our PHP or IOP programs, have been referred by another clinician or treatment provider, are seeking answers about whether a mental health condition is contributing to their substance use, or want an integrated assessment that looks at both their mental health and their addiction in the same clinical conversation. If you fall outside these categories but are wondering whether we can help — call us. We will tell you honestly within minutes.
Not sure if a psychiatric evaluation is the right next step? Our admissions team will give you an honest answer in minutes — no runaround, no commitment.
Co-Occurring Conditions Our Clinical Team Evaluates and Treats
These are the mental health conditions most commonly identified in our psychiatric evaluations alongside addiction. Understanding what may be driving substance use is the first step to treating it effectively.
Depression
Depression is one of the most common co-occurring conditions in addiction — both as a driver of substance use and as a consequence of it. The crash following stimulant use, the emotional blunting of opioids, and the neurological impact of alcohol all produce depressive states that can be clinically indistinguishable from primary depression. Our evaluation identifies which came first and treats both.
Anxiety Disorders
Generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and phobias are frequently self-medicated with alcohol, benzodiazepines, cannabis, or opioids. Our psychiatric evaluation identifies the specific anxiety disorder present and develops a treatment plan that addresses it alongside the addiction — including non-addictive medication management when appropriate.
PTSD & Trauma
PTSD and unresolved trauma are among the most powerful drivers of substance use disorder. Many people in active addiction have experienced significant trauma that has never been properly addressed. Our trauma-informed psychiatric evaluation identifies trauma history and integrates trauma-focused treatment into the recovery plan.
ADHD
Undiagnosed or undertreated ADHD is a significant driver of stimulant misuse, cannabis use disorder, and other addictions. Our psychiatric evaluation specifically screens for ADHD and — when identified — develops a management plan that addresses both the ADHD and the addiction without simply replacing one stimulant with another.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder has one of the highest rates of co-occurring substance use of any psychiatric condition. Stimulant use can precipitate manic episodes and alcohol use can destabilize mood — creating a dangerous feedback loop that requires integrated psychiatric and addiction treatment. Our evaluation specifically screens for bipolar disorder in patients with relevant symptom patterns.
Other Mental Health Conditions
Our psychiatric evaluation also screens for obsessive compulsive disorder, personality disorders, psychotic spectrum conditions, eating disorders, and other conditions that may be present alongside addiction. Call us if you are unsure whether your specific situation falls within our scope — we will give you an honest answer.
Many people do not realize they have a co-occurring condition until they seek help for addiction — and many have been living with untreated depression, anxiety, PTSD, or ADHD for years. A psychiatric evaluation gives you answers. Call 856-200-3127 — we will tell you honestly whether we can help with your specific situation.
What to Expect During a Psychiatric Evaluation
If you have never had a psychiatric evaluation before, it is natural to feel uncertain about what it involves. The process is much more like a structured conversation than most people expect — and considerably less intimidating than the word "psychiatric" might suggest. Our clinical team conducts evaluations in a private, comfortable setting with the explicit goal of understanding your situation as fully as possible — not to judge it.
The evaluation covers your current mental health symptoms and how long you have experienced them, your personal and family psychiatric history, your substance use history and how the two have interacted, any prior mental health treatment or medication history, your current life circumstances, relationships, work, and daily functioning, and any specific concerns or questions you want addressed. The evaluation is collaborative — your perspective on your own experience is a central part of the clinical picture.
Following the evaluation our clinical team provides clear findings and recommendations — what conditions if any were identified, what treatment options are recommended, and what the next steps look like. Everything is explained in plain language. If treatment at Cherry Hill Recovery Center is recommended and you choose to proceed, the transition into our PHP or IOP program is immediate and seamless.

Call 856-200-3127 →Our Dual-Diagnosis Approach — Treating Both at the Same Time
At Cherry Hill Recovery Center psychiatric evaluation is not a standalone service disconnected from addiction treatment. It is the clinical foundation of our dual-diagnosis approach — the process by which we identify every condition present and build a treatment plan that addresses all of them together. Patients who receive a psychiatric evaluation through our PHP or IOP programs benefit from having their mental health and addiction care managed by the same clinical team — with full visibility into both dimensions of their situation.
This integrated approach produces significantly better outcomes than treating addiction and mental health separately. When the psychiatrist managing your medication is also the clinician overseeing your addiction treatment program — or working directly with that team — there is no gap in communication, no competing treatment approaches, and no risk that one provider does not know what the other is doing. This is what genuinely integrated dual-diagnosis care looks like.

Call 856-200-3127 →Who Refers to Cherry Hill Recovery Center for Psychiatric Evaluation
Our psychiatric evaluation and dual-diagnosis program receives referrals from a wide range of clinical and non-clinical sources. If you have been referred or are self-referring — call us and we will tell you if we are the right fit.
Self-Referral
Many people who contact us for a psychiatric evaluation come on their own initiative — they suspect a mental health condition may be contributing to their substance use and want a professional assessment. If that is you — call us. That kind of self-awareness is exactly the starting point for meaningful recovery.
Primary Care & Medical Referrals
Primary care physicians, internists, and other medical providers frequently refer patients to our clinical team when they identify substance use and suspected co-occurring mental health conditions that require specialist evaluation. We communicate findings back to referring providers with the patient's consent.
Treatment Program Referrals
Detox facilities, residential programs, and other treatment providers refer patients to Cherry Hill Recovery Center when those patients need integrated dual-diagnosis evaluation and outpatient follow-up. If you are transitioning from another program and need a psychiatric evaluation as part of that transition — call us.
Court and Probation Referrals
Courts and probation departments sometimes require psychiatric evaluation alongside or separate from drug and alcohol evaluation. Call us to find out whether our clinical team can conduct the specific psychiatric evaluation your court or probation order requires — we will give you a straight answer.
What Happens After Your Psychiatric Evaluation
A psychiatric evaluation at Cherry Hill Recovery Center concludes with a clear clinical picture and honest recommendations. Depending on the findings, our clinical team may recommend entering our PHP or IOP program for integrated dual-diagnosis treatment, beginning outpatient psychiatric medication management as part of an existing program, a specific therapeutic approach for identified conditions, or in some cases a finding that no clinical intervention is currently warranted beyond monitoring and support.
One of the genuine advantages of completing your psychiatric evaluation at Cherry Hill Recovery Center is continuity of care. If treatment in our PHP or IOP program is recommended — and you choose to proceed — your psychiatric findings are already known to your treatment team. There is no re-explaining your history to a new provider. There is no coordination gap between your psychiatrist and your therapist. Your care is integrated from day one.
If a psychiatric evaluation here does not result in a recommendation for our programs — or if you choose not to proceed with treatment here — our clinical team will help connect you with appropriate resources. We do not leave people without a clear next step regardless of the outcome.

Call 856-200-3127 →Psychiatric Medication Management as Part of Your Treatment
For some patients identified in our psychiatric evaluation as having a co-occurring condition that warrants medication management — depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or others — our medical team can provide ongoing psychiatric medication management as an integrated component of our PHP or IOP program. This means your medication is managed by the same clinical team overseeing your addiction treatment — not by a separate provider who does not have visibility into your full clinical picture.
Psychiatric medication management at Cherry Hill Recovery Center is always offered as a clinical option — never a requirement. Whether medication is appropriate is a decision made collaboratively between our medical team and the patient, based on the specific findings of the psychiatric evaluation and the patient's own goals and preferences. Call us to discuss whether this may be relevant to your situation.
Medication as a Tool — Not a Requirement
Not every patient who receives a psychiatric evaluation will need or want medication. Many people achieve excellent outcomes through therapy and behavioral treatment alone. Our clinical team will give you an honest recommendation based on your specific evaluation findings — and the final decision is always yours.
Does Insurance Cover Psychiatric Evaluation in New Jersey?
Most major insurance plans cover psychiatric evaluation under behavioral health benefits. Coverage details — including whether a referral is required, what your copay or deductible is, and whether our providers are in-network — vary by plan. Our admissions team verifies your specific coverage before your appointment so there are no surprises. If your evaluation results in a recommendation for PHP or IOP, most major insurance plans are required to cover those services under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act.
